Salon 10 presents Dumza Maswana with Mthokozisi Mabuza on keys and David Chala on percussion, and special opening acts for a very special South African musical journey on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 September.
Dumza Maswana is an acclaimed South African singer, songwriter, and radio broadcaster renowned for his deep, resonant baritone, rich emotional storytelling, and commitment to preserving Xhosa culture through music. Born in the vibrant town of Ngqushwa in the Eastern Cape, Dumza was immersed in traditional musical heritage from early childhood.
His grandmother served as his foundational teacher, introducing him to traditional vocal techniques and oral folklore. Emulating the singing styles, dance, and linguistic nuance of the women in his village, Dumza formed Healing Voice—an all-male gospel ensemble—at age 17 before relocating to Johannesburg to expand his artistic career.
Transitioning into jazz following impactful encounters at jam sessions in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and mentorship under Bongani Tulwana, Dumza synthesizes Xhosa indigenous idioms with contemporary jazz arrangements. His artistry bridges generations, ensuring southern African musical heritage remains vibrant and modern.
Influenced by legendary figures such as Victor Ntoni, Jabu Khanyile, Ringo Madlingozi, Victor Ndlazilwana, and Zim Ngqawana, Dumza’s music stands out for its vocal purity, authentic Xhosa lyricism, and rich harmonic structures. His compositions balance themes of spiritual reflection, romance, social commentary, and ancestral praise.
