Dumza Maswana Live in Hong Kong
An extraordinary evening of music awaits at Salon 10 on September 9 and 10, as acclaimed South African vocalist Dumza Maswana takes the stage, joined by pianist Mthokozisi Mabuza and Hong Kong–based percussionist David Chala.
Dumza Maswana is celebrated for his deep, resonant baritone and emotive storytelling. Born in Ngqushwa, Eastern Cape, he grew up immersed in Xhosa traditions, guided by his grandmother’s teachings in vocal technique and folklore. From founding the gospel ensemble Healing Voices at 17 to evolving into a jazz artist under the mentorship of Bongani Tulwana, Dumza has become a cultural bridge—synthesizing indigenous idioms with contemporary jazz to preserve and modernize southern African heritage.
Mthokozisi Mabuza, a dynamic pianist, composer, arranger, and visionary producer from Pretoria, thrives in Gqeberha’s vibrant music scene. His artistry has illuminated stages alongside Dumza Maswana, Edgar Muzah, Asanda Mqiki, Zain SA, Ntsika, The Soil, and Sisonke Xonti. Beyond performance, his creative fingerprint extends into production, contributing to the acclaimed Son of a Tribe album, nominated for both SAMA and AFRIMMA awards. With technical mastery and emotive storytelling, Mthokozisi continues to shape the sound of tomorrow in South Africa.
David Chala, a Hong Kong–based percussionist, adds a global rhythm to the ensemble. His artistry infuses vibrant textures and percussive energy, bridging cultures and elevating the collective sound.
Together, these three artists promise a night of transcendent music—an intimate journey through rhythm, melody, and soul.
