About U-zhaan
U-zhaan, born in Saitama, Japan, is a groundbreaking tabla virtuoso renowned for bridging Indian classical traditions with contemporary global sounds. A disciple of the legendary tabla maestros Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and Ustad Zakir Hussain, he began his journey with the instrument at age 18, mastering its intricate rhythms while cultivating a unique cross-genre vision.

Blending tabla with electronic, jazz, hip-hop, and pop, U-zhaan has collaborated with luminaries like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cornelius, Haruomi Hosono…, showcasing his versatility and innovative spirit. His music exemplifies his experimental approach, weaving tabla into lush electronic textures.
A dynamic performer, U-zhaan has graced stages at international festivals and venues, earning acclaim for his live-looping techniques and genre-defying projects. Based in Tokyo, he continues to push musical boundaries, acting as a cultural ambassador through collaborations that transcend geographical and stylistic borders. His work not only redefines the tabla’s role in modern music but also fosters global dialogue through rhythm and innovation.

From 2000 he joined Asa-Chang & Junray and released 4 albums including "Hana" and "Kage No Nai Hito". Leaving the group in 2010, he released "Kawagoe Rendezvous" as U-zhaan × rei harakami. In 2014 he released his solo album "Tabla Rock Mountain" with guest musicians such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cornelius, and Hanaregumi. In 2017 he released the album "2 Tone" which was co-produced with Shuta Hasunuma. In 2020 he performed at the music festival "Saptak Annual Festival of Music" held in Ahmedabad, India. 2021 he composed the score for “Star Wars: Visions”.
